As the official student voice of MU, The Maneater covers campus news, sports, arts and entertainment, as well as reporting the latest news in the city of Columbia and the state of Missouri. Since Gold’s time, The Maneater has worked hard to maintain rigorous reporting while also being a source of accurate and complete information. When The Maneater gets mad, all hell is going to break loose. And don’t try getting rough or screaming ‘libel’ when a Maneater reporter crashes your meetings. The first thing Gold did when taking over was change the paper’s name to The Maneater. The Maneater’s name has since signified a strong and aggressive paper that has been serving as the student voice of MU.Īlong with the new name, Gold instituted a new editorial policy: “The Maneater by its very name cannot content itself with merely presenting the news … The Maneater is a tiger with fangs bared and claws sharpened ready to analyze the facts and then to pounce.” “If you want to keep us out, better bar the door. For the six years that it existed, the Missouri Student was staffed by members of the Delta Upsilon fraternity. In 1955, Joel Gold and Jim Willard became the Editor-in-Chief and Business Manager of the Missouri Student, a newspaper largely regarded as a PR newsletter for the student government and Greek Life. The Maneater recognizes that the organization is free to exist as a non-registered organization, outside of this Agreement and without the accompanying benefits. Recognition and any support of The Maneater by MU, including, but not limited to, the provision of certain opportunities, benefits, or access to resources, is not an endorsement by the University of The Maneater’s beliefs or goals. Provided that the organization meets the requirements as set out by the Dean of Student in the Guidelines for Student Organization, MU is willing to provide certain benefits to The Maneater. The Maneater is fully responsible for its own activities, and The Maneater’s goals and activities are determined solely by The Maneater, subject to the limitations identified in this Agreement. However, the University does control its facilities, services, and property, and to the extent that such University assets or services are used by The Maneater in conducting its private affairs or activities, The Maneater may be under additional terms and conditions that govern the use of the specific facility, service, or property.Īs an independent entity, The Maneater is free to exist or disband at any time, however the University holds the right to recognize or pull recognition from the organization. Further, MU does not supervise, direct, or control The Maneater’s activities. The parties agree that The Maneater operates independently and is not an agent, servant, or employee of MU, and neither has the authority to act for the other or commit the other to any activity, transaction, or agreement. The University shall make available certain staff and resources under the Dean of Students to answer questions regarding the relationship between the University and The Maneater and to provide education and services to support the effective functioning of The Maneater. To this end, The Maneater’s leaders and members shall assume the responsibility for the organization’s activities and conduct. The relationship between the University and The Maneater is viewed as consistent with the University’s philosophy of education and student self-governance. The University recognizes the important role played by The Maneater in engaging students, creating a diverse co-curricular environment, fostering the expression of students’ ideas and interests, and adding to the unique identity of the University. The Maneater is an independent legal entity or independent association of individual students.
